Operation Netra 1.0: How the Indian Army is Restoring Vision in Ladakh’s Frontiers

 Operation Netra

In the rugged, high-altitude landscape of Ladakh, where the terrain is as challenging as the climate, a landmark medical initiative has transcended traditional defense. Operation Netra 1.0, inaugurated on April 26, 2026, by the Indian Army’s Fire and Fury Corps, represents a pivotal moment in healthcare outreach, dedicated to restoring vision and enhancing the quality of life for remote border communities.

A Visionary Mission at 11,500 Feet

Launched at the Military Hospital in Leh, Operation Netra 1.0 is more than a temporary medical camp; it is a lifeline. The initiative’s primary goal is to conduct over 200 free cataract surgeries for residents who lack access to specialized ophthalmic care.
Inaugurating the event, Lt Gen Hitesh Bhalla, GOC of the Fire and Fury Corps, described the operation as a "vision-restoring initiative bringing hope and transforming lives."

The Road to Restoration: Months of Outreach

The surgeries taking place this week are the result of a massive three-month screening campaign. Since early 2026, the Army has conducted eye camps in eight of the most remote locations across Ladakh, including:
Kargil and Nubra Valley
Tangste, Chushul, and the Changthang Region
Through these preliminary camps, over 950 individuals were screened, ensuring that modern surgical expertise reaches even the most isolated corners of India.

A Collaborative Effort in Healthcare

To ensure the highest standard of care, the Indian Army deployed a specialized team of ophthalmologists from the prestigious Army Hospital (Research & Referral) in New Delhi. This seamless integration between top-tier military medical expertise and civil health infrastructure—supported by local officials like Dr. Rinchen Chosdol (CMO Leh)—showcases a unified approach to public health and rural outreach.

As Operation Netra 1.0 concludes its surgical phase, it leaves behind a legacy of restored sight and renewed trust, proving that when clinical expertise meets humanitarian intent, the impact is truly life-changing.
