Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words (decoding). Also called reading disability , dyslexia affects areas of the brain that process language. People with dyslexia have normal intelligence and usually have normal vision. Most children with dyslexia can succeed in school with tutoring or a specialized education program. Emotional support also plays an important role. Research Suggests There's a Big Overlooked Benefit of Having Dyslexia The modern world is stitched together by threads of written language. For those with the reading disorder dyslexia, the endless tangle of words can feel like an obstacle to survival. Long framed purely as a learning disorder, the neurological condition that makes the decoding of text so difficult could also benefit individuals and their community in a world full of unknowns. Yoga

Yoga: What You Need To Know What is yoga and how does it work? Yoga  is an ancient and complex practice, rooted in Indian philosophy. It began as a spiritual practice but has become popular as a way of promoting physical and mental well-nobeing. Although classical yoga also includes other elements, yoga as practiced in the United States typically emphasizes physical postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation (dyana).  There are many different yoga styles, ranging from gentle practices to physically demanding ones. Differences in the types of yoga used in research studies may affect study results. This makes it challenging to evaluate research on the health effects of yoga. Yoga and two practices of Chinese origin—tai chi and qi gong—are sometimes called “meditative movement” practices. All three practices include both meditative elements and physical ones. What are the health benefits of yoga? Research suggests that yoga may: Help improve general wellness by

What are the risks of yoga?

Yoga is generally considered a safe form of physical activity for healthy people when performed properly, under the guidance of a qualified instructor. However, as with other forms of physical activity, injuries can occur. The most common injuries are sprains and strains, and the parts of the body most commonly injured are the knee or lower leg. Serious injuries are rare. The risk of injury associated with yoga is lower than that for higher impact physical activities. Older adults may need to be particularly cautious when practicing yoga. The rate of yoga-related injuries treated in emergency departments is higher in people age 65 and older than in younger adults. To reduce your chances of getting hurt while doing yoga: Practice yoga under the guidance of a qualified instructor. Practicing yoga by self-study without supervision has been associated with increased risks. If you’re new to yoga, avoid extreme practices such as headstands, shoulder stands, the lotus position, and forceful
Does yoga have benefits for children? Research suggests that yoga may have several potential benefits for children.
What does research show about practicing yoga during pregnancy? Physical activities, such as yoga, are safe and desirable for most pregnant women, as long as appropriate precautions are taken. Yoga may have health benefits for pregnant women, such as decreasing stress, anxiety, and depression.
Is yoga helpful for people with chronic diseases? There’s promising evidence that yoga may help people with some chronic diseases manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life. Thus, it could be a helpful addition to treatment programs.
Can yoga help with menopause symptoms? Yoga seems to be at least as effective as other types of exercise in relieving menopause symptoms. A 2018 evaluation of 13 studies (more than 1,300 participants) of yoga for menopause symptoms found that yoga reduced physical symptoms, such as hot flashes, as well as psychological symptoms, such as anxiety or depression.

Mental health

How does yoga affect mental health? There’s evidence that yoga may be helpful for anxiety associated with various life situations, such as medical conditions or stressful educational programs, and for depressive symptoms. The evidence on yoga’s impact on diagnosed mental health conditions is less promising.

Can yoga help with pain management?

Research has been done on yoga for several conditions that involve pain. Studies of yoga for low-back pain and neck pain have had promising results, and yoga is among the options that the American College of Physicians recommends for first-line treatment of chronic low-back pain. Preliminary evidence suggests that yoga may also be helpful for tension headaches and knee osteoarthritis pain.

neurological diseases

Oxidative stress is a key a therapeutic target for many neurological diseases. A strong rationale for oxidative stress in a given neurological disease should be the guiding factor for antioxidant therapy. Antioxidant drug development should account for both the beneficial and the harmful effects of reactive oxygen species. Biomarkers to monitor target engagement can guide antioxidant clinical trials for neurological diseases. There is widespread recognition that reactive oxygen species (ROS) play key roles in normal brain function and pathology in the context of neurological disease. Oxidative stress continues to be a key therapeutic target for neurological diseases. In developing antioxidant therapies for neurological disease, special attention should be given to the brain's unique vulnerability to oxidative insults and its architecture. Consideration of antioxidant therapy should be guided by a strong rationale for oxidative stress in a given neurological disease. This review pr

Age-Related Macular Degeneration

New Analysis Confirms Benefit of Supplements for Slowing Age-Related Macular Degeneration Substituting lutein and zeaxanthin for beta-carotene in a dietary supplement that slows the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) increased the supplement’s effectiveness and reduced the risk of lung cancer due to beta-carotene, according to a follow-up analysis of a large clinical trial. This new report, which analyzed 10 years of data from Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2), was funded by the National Institutes of Health and published in  JAMA Ophthalmology . AMD, the most common cause of blindness in older Americans, is a degenerative disease of the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Progressive death of retinal cells in the macula, the part of the retina that provides clear central vision, eventually leads to blindness. Treatment can slow or reverse vision loss; however, no cure for AMD exists.  The original Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS)

Brains can be hotter than the rest of our bodies, especially in women

Our grey matter can be over 2°C warmer than the rest of our body, with the highest temperatures reached by women’s brains in the second half of the menstrual cycle. Healthy human brains can be hotter than we thought, reaching nearly 41°C in women, according to a small study. The findings could change how people with brain injuries are medically managed, says Nina Rzechorzek at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK. “This is going to give us another window into how the brain is working.” Normal brain temperature is generally assumed to be the same as that of the rest of the body – about 37 °C – but we had no way to know for sure. People with head injuries may have highly sensitive temperature probes put into their brains, but this isn’t done to people who don’t need their brain temperature monitored for medical reasons. Rzechorzek’s team looked at the brains of 40 healthy people – half of whom were women – using a relatively new technique called magnetic resonance sp

Effects of consuming nicotine & its products

Effects of Cigarette Smoking on Environment and Human Health Cigarette smoking causes environmental pollution by releasing toxic air pollutants into the atmosphere. The cigarette butts also litter the environment, and the toxic chemicals in the residues seep into soils and waterways, thereby causing soil and water pollution, respectively.  Animals and plants that come into contact or absorb the toxic substances from the cigarette residues are affected as well. As such, it’s not only the cigarette smoke that causes manifold impacts on people and the environment but also the cigarette butt and other wastes released during the entire production process of cigarettes. Interestingly, when people hear about cigarette smoking, they often think of the health risks it has on the human body. Many fail to look at the critical side topic, which pertains to how it harms the environment. Herein are the discussions about the serious impact of cigarette smoking on human health and the environment. De

new genetic eye disease - Macular dystrophy

Genetic and clinical research reveals new type of macular dystrophy, a cause of central vision loss. National Eye Institute (NEI) have identified a new disease that affects the macula, a small part of the light-sensing retina needed for sharp, central vision. Scientists report their findings on the novel macular dystrophy, which is yet to be named, in JAMA Ophthalmology.  Retinal images of a patient with a TIMP3 mutation causing atypical symptoms. While there is visible damage in the retina (dark circles), there is no CNV present.  Macular dystrophies are disorders that usually cause central visual loss because of mutations in several genes, including ABCA4, BEST1, PRPH2, and TIMP3. For example, patients with Sorsby Fundus Dystrophy, a genetic eye disease specifically linked to TIMP3 variants, usually develop symptoms in adulthood. They often have sudden changes in visual acuity due to choroidal neovascularization– new, abnormal blood vessels that grow under the retina, leaking fluid

Hidden DNA' in The Blood Could Help Some Cancer Patients Avoid Chemo

In this article i will be discussing about the chemotherapy & its alternative advanced , aspect in cancer treatment   Chemotherapy is an incredible tool for annihilating cancer cells, but our regular cells end up in the crossfire, which can result in life-altering side effects. Chemotherapy or chemo for short is not always required for successful treatment either, but how to tell if someone requires it can be both an art and a science. Now, a new study provides clinicians with a technique that has already helped some stage II colon cancer patients avoid chemo, with no change to their clinical outcomes. The technique employed in this new study uses a type of DNA called circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA). This is pretty self-explanatory – it's small sections of fragmented DNA from tumors that are circulating around in the blood stream. Importantly, they are not part of a tumor cell however, just the DNA from the tumor by itself . The presence of ctDNA in the bloodstream post-surgery p

Norovirus

Norovirus (vomiting bug ) Norovirus, also called the "winter vomiting bug", is a stomach bug that causes vomiting and diarrhoea. It can be very unpleasant, but usually goes away in about 2 days. The main symptoms of norovirus are: feeling sick (nausea) diarrhoea being sick (vomiting) You may also have: a high temperature a headache aching arms and legs The symptoms start suddenly within 1 to 2 days of being infected. How to treat norovirus yourself You can usually treat yourself or your child at home. The most important thing is to rest and have lots of fluids to avoid dehydration. You will usually start to feel better in 2 to 3 days. How norovirus is spread Norovirus can spread very easily. You can catch norovirus from: close contact with someone with norovirus touching surfaces or objects that have the virus on them, then touching your mouth eating food that's been prepared or handled by someone with norovirus Washing your hands frequently with soap and water is the b

How ‘Deep Work’ Can Help You Focus, Reduce Stress, and Be More Productive   This is Present Tense, a series on mindfulness for busy people (read: all of us). Whether you're at work, on a walk, or hanging with loved ones, mindfulness can help you stay connected and engaged – no matter what the circumstances . I have seven tabs open on my internet browser, an email drafted, a few notes scrawled into my agenda, and a creeping tension in my shoulder. I feel like I’m balancing spinning plates. I can’t focus on just one, or the rest will fall. If I don’t make some adjustments fast, everything’s going to come crashing down on top of me. Can you relate? Luckily, I recently found a different way to approach my work that doesn’t leave me feeling scattered and overwhelmed. It’s called “deep work.” What is deep work? Deep work is when you’re fully present and immersed in the task at hand. Some people refer to it as being “in the zone” or in a state of flow. It involves being completely focu

The Relaxation Response Can Help You Fight Stress

When you’re under stress, your body reacts by releasing hormones that produce the “fight-or-flight” response. Your heart rate, breathing rate, and blood pressure go up, your muscles tense, and you sweat more. If this happens often, over a long period of time, it can worsen many health problems.   There is no drug to cure stress. But we do have access to a built-in “stress reset button.” It’s called the relaxation response. It slows the heart rate, lowers blood pressure, and decreases oxygen consumption and levels of stress hormones.   Some complementary health approaches, such as yoga, meditation and mindfulness practices, and relaxation techniques, may help to produce the relaxation response and counteract the ill effects of stress.

NO Tobaco day

You might think cigarettes make you cool, but it’s killing you, fools! Stop being a wacko and quit tobacco. This is no lie; if you keep smoking, then you’ll die. Just like you crush that cigarette butt, life will crush you if you don’t stop smoking. Every single day about 1300 people quit smoking – by dying. Quit tobacco today or else look at your future go in smoke. Cancer is certainly no joke, so quit that smoke.
